Is It Possible to Philosophize through Film?

The aim of this talk is to address the following question: is it possible to philosophize through film? To this end, the talk will be divided into three parts. First, I will examine the analogy between film and literature, with particular attention to Dostoevsky’s The Brothers Karamazov. Second, I will focus on the philosophical implications underlying the question of whether it is possible to philosophize through film. I will argue that some of these implications pose a considerable challenge to anyone attempting to answer this question. Third and finally, I will identify what I take to be some of the prejudices of contemporary philosophy, or at least of a certain strand of it. I will then offer a few examples that, in my view, demonstrate how the filmic medium can convey philosophical content, even if not philosophy itself in the strict sense.
